What is Lean 5S?

5S is a workplace organisational and housekeeping methodolgy derived from the Japanese words seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke.  In translation, these words mean sort, straighten, shine, standardise & sustain.

It is a powerful LEAN manufacturing tool that requires discipline and buy-in from an entire team to reduce waste of motion and increase productivity.

A place for everything and everything in its place!

What does each of the 5S's mean?

1. SORT

Ascertain what is required and what you can do without and remove unnecessary items.

2. STRAIGHTEN

Place all remaining items in a neat and orderly fashion that's easily accessible.

3. SHINE

Clean the workplace of any rubbish, spills, dust and ensure good lightning is in place.

4. STANDARDISE

Ensure standards through visual management and carry these through to all areas.

5. SUSTAIN

The toughest aspect of any 5S project is to continue to instill good habits.
